DEV Community

dev.to ↗

Free route community

Researched from public pages — no submission was run · sources read 2026-09-25. Rules change — recheck the platform's own pages before submitting.

Requirements

  • A DEV account (create via dev.to/enter or the 'Create account' button; GitHub/email sign-in)
  • Content should be relevant to software development; posts are governed by the Code of Conduct and Terms of Use
  • For a company presence, Organization Accounts exist at dev.to/organizations

Prepare before opening the form

  • Account + user profile (bio, links)
  • A substantive launch/technical post — e.g., 'how we built X' performs far better than pure promotion
  • Decide individual post vs Organization account for ongoing product content

Workflow

  1. Create an account (dev.to/enter?state=new-user or 'Create account')
  2. Fill the profile (name, bio, website link — the profile itself is a durable backlink surface)
  3. Write a post at dev.to/new: title, markdown body, tags, cover image; include the product link with context
  4. Publish and confirm the post renders publicly at dev.to/<user>/<slug>
  5. Optionally create an Organization to publish under the product's brand

Watch for

  • DEV is a community, not a directory — thin 'check out my tool' posts get flagged/downweighted; lead with the technical story
  • Canonical URL field exists for syndicated posts — use it to avoid duplicate-content issues
  • DEV++ is a paid membership tier; it is not required for posting
  • All content on dev.to; outbound links' follow status is not documented on fetched pages

What counts as live

The post is publicly reachable at dev.to/<username>/<slug> and your profile page shows the website link to logged-out visitors

Not verified

  • Whether post/profile outbound links are dofollow
  • Any new-account throttling (post frequency limits) not shown on public pages
