Requirements

  • You need admin access to the repository — topics can only be added to repos you administer, not to other people's projects
  • Topics must be lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens; 50 chars max; no more than 20 topics per repository
  • Topics should describe the project's purpose, subject area, community, or language — accurate classification, not keyword stuffing
  • For the second catalog entry on this domain (AdamXweb/awesome-aussie): submission is a pull request to the awesome-list repo; the project must fit the list's scope (Australian-built repos/projects) and the list's contribution rules

Prepare before opening the form

  • A public GitHub repository for the product (open-source repo, example app, or SDK)
  • A shortlist of accurate topics — check github.com/topics/ and competitor repos for the canonical topic names
  • For awesome-list routes: read the target repo's CONTRIBUTING.md / PR template and existing entry format before opening a PR

Workflow

  1. Open the repository's main page on GitHub
  2. Click the gear icon next to 'About' in the top-right (Edit repository metadata)
  3. Under 'Topics', type and select/add relevant topics; accept or decline GitHub's suggested topics
  4. Click 'Save changes' — the repo is then indexed under each topic page (github.com/topics/<topic>)
  5. For the Awesome Aussie entry: fork the repo, add the project in the list's established format, and open a pull request

Watch for

  • This is classification of your own repo, not a listing submission — there is no review queue for topics
  • Topic names are public even when added from a private repository
  • Two batch entries share this domain: 'GitHub Topics' (metadata route) and 'Awesome Aussie' (awesome-list PR route) — both are covered here
  • Awesome-list maintainers reject self-promotional PRs that don't fit scope or ignore the contribution format

What counts as live

The repository's topics appear under its About section and the repo is listed on github.com/topics/<topic>; for the awesome-list route, the PR is merged and the entry renders in the list README

Not verified

  • How quickly topic pages re-index a newly tagged repo
  • Whether AdamXweb/awesome-aussie is actively maintained (PR review responsiveness)
