Requirements
- Not a directory — freelance/contributor pitches only; no listing product
- Pitch goes to the section editor by email — Business & Technology editor Tony Ho Tran ([email protected]); other sections have their own editors listed on /pitch
- Slate wants surprising arguments and fresh ideas — opinion/analysis and reported pieces; Google your idea first to avoid the familiar
- Distill the idea into a pitch even if a full draft exists (attach the draft, but still pitch in the email body)
- Include a 1-2 sentence bio and links to published work (blog posts acceptable)
- Disclose simultaneous submissions; wait ~a week before taking a non-timely pitch elsewhere
Prepare before opening the form
- An argument-driven story idea, not a product announcement — Slate publishes opinion, analysis, and reported features
- Research showing the idea is fresh (not covered by Slate or elsewhere)
- Short bio + links to prior published writing
- The right section: Business/Technology is the natural fit for a SaaS-angle piece
Workflow
- Read https://slate.com/pitch and study recent pieces in the target section
- Write a concise pitch email (claim + evidence + why it fits Slate's voice) to the section editor's named address
- Attach a full draft if one exists, but keep the pitch in the body
- Wait ~a week; one follow-up max — silence means take it elsewhere
- If published, the piece appears as a Slate article under your byline
Watch for
- Do not pitch the same idea to a second Slate editor after a pass — editors coordinate internally
- No more than one follow-up email
- This is freelance writing, not a product listing — a SaaS 'launch' does not fit; you need a genuine argument or reported story
- Also has a /tips page for news tips (separate from pitches)
What counts as live
A pitched article is published at slate.com under the contributor's byline
Not verified
- Pay rates for accepted freelance pieces
- Whether the business/tech editor still actively commissions outside pitches
